Favorite Inauguration Moments

"The oaf of office," spoken by Feinstein.

The blown oaf by Roberts and Obama

The speech that resembled little of his words on the campaign trail

And, of course, to top it all off, Elizabeth Alexander's "A Song for the Day." I won't dignify the "poem" by printing it here, but it was funny, let me tell you.

Oh, and as an added bonus, the ending prayer with the real poem in it was, to be frank, amazing. "When red can get ahead. When brown can stick around. When yella can be mella. When white will do what's right." Deep, deep stuff!

I don't think it's fully sunk in that Obama actually is the president now. How about you?

A Movie Recommendation

For those of you who haven't yet, go see Gran Torino this weekend. It's funny, thought-provoking, and pretty much perfect! Yes, it's rated R. Yes, there's a lot of language. Just trust me: it's fantastic. A review will soon follow...

Football At Its Finest

A moment of silence, please, for this glorious season hath ended.

With the crowning of the new BCS champions, the college football year has officially ended. Yes, there may be all-star games and whatnot, but let's face it, the glory is over. We must soldier on, trudging through the drab and drear television world ("Golf, anybody?" "Nah, they've got a special on right now: watching painted grass grow and dry at the same time. Should be much more exciting!") until next fall arrives with its terrific display of color and, more importantly, football rivalry.

Fortunately for fans, however, the college ball season didn't fade into nonexistence with a predictable bowl series and neat-and-tidy victories. There was plenty that happened over the last few weeks to keep the talking heads, well, talking for a good while now.

Especially in the last week, however. I would argue that we saw some of the best football ever with the final two BCS games: Texas/Ohio State and Florida/Oklahoma. I was fortunate enough to have an preconceived emotional stake in both of these games. I love Texas, and though I was sorely disappointed they didn't make it to the title game this time around, the last half of the Fiesta Bowl was a decent consolation prize, if nothing else. Consequently, because I love Texas, I loathe Oklahoma, for several reasons: the traditional rivalry, of course, but also the double snub of Heisman and Championship, so I was eager to see them lose. In addition, Tim Tebow holds a special place in my heart. Next to Colt McCoy, he's one of the best quarterbacks in today's college ball, and arguably one of the best in the history of the sport. His background--his parents were missionaries, he's one of five kids, and he was homeschooled until college--only further endears him to me.

I love football. There's no other sport like it. No other sport has the energy and vibe of football, where the fans are nuts and the players feed off of their excitement. No other sport has such an obvious team unity than football, where each person must play his part and work together to win. No other sport offers such opportunities for leadership than football, from Colt McCoy's unifying force to Tim Tebow's hopping, skipping, and jumping as he pushes his team to victory, slipping into a coach's position when he's not on the field. No other sport requires the strategizing and planning of football.

But perhaps what I love the most about football is that it is the last bastion of masculinity in a postmodern world where the true man is in touch with his feminine side. Make no mistake, football is war on a gridiron, where players sacrifice all, abusing their bodies for the team. The battle cries of the team as the take the field, the clash of offensive and defensive linemen, the touchdown celebrations, the chest and body bumps, the collisions--all of it is a display of maledom at its very best. It's an area of public life feminism has yet to severely influence, and it will take more than the tenacity of Tim Tebow running on a fourth down for them to take over the sport. Long live the gridiron glory!
